How to Take a Break During an Argument

Storming out during an argument is not a great way to take a break. Maybe you return to the argument, but more often than not there is still tension in the air, maybe you become passive-aggressive with one another and the repercussions last for weeks. There is no closure.

Finding the words to take a break in the heat of the moment can be difficult. Here are a few guidelines for taking a break:

  1. Use ‘I” statements. “I am feeling ____________”. “ I need to take a break”
  2. Set a time limit to return to the conversation “I need an hour to clear my head and calm down” (Not longer than 24 hours).
