How Having to Be Right Damages your Relationship and What to Do About it.

Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who has to be right all the time? It can be so frustrating. Even when there is evidence that they are wrong, they won’t openly say, “oh, I was wrong”, they will either continue to argue, avoid discussing it again or say that you had missed their point and they were, in fact, right. So frustrating!

As the recipient, you have a choice to keep arguing back and prove your point, with the knowledge that you will never be right, so you are fighting a losing battle or giving in. Neither seems very appealing in the long term.

Dr J. Gottman (a leader in relationship research) stresses the importance of accepting influence from your partner if you want a happy and stable marriage.

Let me know if you have had the experience of being with someone who is always right and how it made you feel.
