5 Components of an Apology – According to the Research

Have you ever had an apology that didn’t feel complete?

I know I have. And I have probably given them too. Jennifer Thomas and Gary Chapman asked thousands of American’s what they wanted and needed when they received an apology.

The results were the five aspects above. They note that you only need to use one or two of these five components, but it would be appropriate to use all of these components if you are working with a big betrayal like an affair.

If you are not used to apologising in this way, it can be helpful to practice before you say it in person. You could practice in your car or bedroom saying it out loud. That way, when you say it in person, it is often easier to say.

Is there anything you would add to this list?
